That’s all the background junk out of the way, let’s get to the main course. Here’r our HP Pavilion 15 review.
The Good
Great Performance
The HP Pavilion 15 is one of my favorite home laptops currently on the shelves, specifically due to the amount of performance you get for the money.
This laptop is available with a quad-core Intel Core i5 processor, and up to 16GB of DDR4 RAM. This means you’re able to do complex computing, like photo editing or video streaming, easily and quickly. Also, with the high amount of RAM, you’ll be able to do more at once.
Most home users don’t think they need to have a lot of processing power or ram, but more and more processing power is needed to do simple, everyday things; like watching YouTube videos. Also, things like having a bunch of tabs open on Google Chrome eat up RAM fast.
I always advise customers look for something with enough processing power and RAM to serve them in a few years. These days, I pretty much recommend every customer gets at least an i5 and 8GB of RAM. Having a little bit extra is a great advantage of this laptop, and that’s why its the first point of our HP Pavilion 15 review.
Sick Display
Home laptops are being used more and more for multiple applications. Ten years ago, none of my customers were watching movies on their laptops. Now, it’s often considered on of the computer’s primary functions.
When you are watching Netflix, you want at least an HD display, like the HP Pavilion 15 has. While a 1080p screen would be better, for a 15 inch display, the difference is negligible.
This is also a 10-finger multitouch screen. This means you can touch multiple things on the screen at once without the computer freaking out.
A lot of my customers say they don’t need a touch screen, until they’ve had one. Once you’ve had the freedom to just jab your pointer at whatever you want, you’ll never go back to being without a touch screen again.
It’s Sexy
The HP Pavilion 15 is a sexy laptop. I’m not afraid to say it.
A couple generations ago, the HP Pavilion series was still a ugly black plastic brick. I hated it. It made me sick.
This laptop is small, sleek, and has a brushed aluminum finish that’s very pleasant to look at. The trackpad and keyboard have great response, and they fit the overall aesthetic. It’s lightweight, and it seems like the designers didn’t include anything that didn’t need to be there.
Ports on Ports
So, let’s say that Full HD just isn’t enough for you. Let’s say you need to watch your YouTubes at 1080p, or 4k resolution. Well, with the HP Pavilion 15, that’s no problem.
This laptop had a full size HDMI output port. Unlike fancier computers like my Surface Book 2, you can just hook this laptop up to a fancy monitor or tv display without a fancy proprietary cable.
The Intel UHD integrated graphics allow for 1080p and 4k output to an external display. This is awesome for playing movies, but it’s also great for working on multiple monitors. It’s just a great feature to have.
Along with the full size HDMI ports, the HP Pavilion 15 has most of the ports home users could want. A USB-C port, a couple USB 3.1 ports, a 3.5mm headphone jack, an SD-Card reader and ethernet port come standard.
Fast Boots
Remember what I said about never going back after having a touch screen for a while? Well, multiply that by 10 for having an SSD.
I lover having a solid state drive. 10 second boot times? Yes please!
Seriously, this computer has a 512GB solid state hard drive. That’s plenty of storage for most home users pictures and music, while also being an SSD.
Whereas a normal hard drive takes at least two minutes to boot fully, an SSD typically takes less than 10 seconds. If you have an iPad, think about how long it takes to turn that on. Most laptops with solid state drives will boot even faster.
I can’t convey any further how much of a difference an SSD makes. But I promise, if you use a solid state drive for even a short time, you won’t be able to stand waiting for normal HDDs ever again.
Bang for Buck
There’s a lot of good mentioned in this HP Pavilion 15 review, but it comes down to this: You get a lot of performance for the money with this laptop. It’s not the best on the market, and that’s not what you’re looking for. For under 1000 dollars in 2020, you’re going to have a hard time finding a better performing laptop than the HP Pavilion 15.
That’s all the good, let’s take a look at the bad.
The Bad
No Optical Drive
The HP Pavilion 15 is a 15″ laptop that doesn’t have a CD/DVD drive. Whether or not this matters depends on the user.
I have a lot of customer who are adamant they need to have an optical drive, until I ask them this: When was the last time you used a disk with your computer?
Most likely, the answer is long enough that you don’t remember. Most software comes on download cards now instead of disks, and media is continuing to move toward a digital-only market.
Maybe you have a huge CD collection you want to digitize. That’s fine. With the HP Pavilion 15, you’ll just need to hook up an external optical drive. They tend to cost about twenty or thirty bucks.
No Backlit Keyboard
For a laptop of this level, you just assume it has a backlit keyboard, which it doesn’t. That’s a bit of a bummer.
In low light situations, like typing laptop reviews in a dark basement in Minnesota, having a backlit keyboard to guide you around the keys would be nice.
Easily Scratches
So, I love the finish of this laptop. It’s sleek and it looks great. But, it also scratches easily. And those scratches show.
This might not seem like a big deal at first, but for a family laptop, this might be a deal breaker. If you move this laptop around a lot, it’s going to start to look beat up.
Lemon Risk
I need to mention that there’s been many users of this laptop who have received units dead on arrival. That sound’s terrible, right? Well, not so fast.
When I reviewed the HP OfficeJet Pro 9015 printer, I mentioned there were a lot of lemons. But that’s not because the printer is terrible. It’s because it’s so popular. That’s the same case here.
The reason you hear about a lot of lemons with this computer is because it sells so many more units than other laptops. So, even if the percentage of lemons is the same, there’s going to be a lot more of them.
If your laptop is DOA, be sure to return it to the retailer right away. Don’t contact HP’s customer service to try to fix it. They’ll get you past the return policy and you’ll be sunk. Exchange it with Amazon and let them deal with it.

The Bottom Line
The HP Pavilion 15 offers a lot of performance for a low price tag. It has a great processor, RAM, and an SSD. Along with performance, it looks good and hits the “fun” factor.
