The Social Definition of what is acne

Now that we know what the dictionary and web definition, we need to know the social definition.

Having suffered with it re-occurring most of my young life I can give a first hand answer of this, and a first hand view of this sometimes uncontrollable disease.

Although behavior will differ from person to person, those answering this question usually display a few common characteristics.

The first and sometimes the most devastating is low self esteem. This can be the most critical characteristic because it can lead to other problems such as depression and anxiety disorders.

Second could be an unhealthy preoccupation with their skin and their outward appearance. This could lead to developing some ocd characteristics such as continuously cleansing the face and neck area.

Third characteristic that may develop is anti-social behavior. Some people may start to withdraw from social situations such as parties and other functions where groups of people may gather especially formal occasions.

Fourth may also be a dangerous effect. Rebellion and over all bad attitude. Rebellion may come in the form of fighting with everyone and anyone.

This could lead to being arrested or hospitalization for injuries incurred in street fights. Lastly Acne usually leads to a poor self image, which can cause other health problems.

When someone thinks of themselves as less than average they tend to be more down on themselves and not really care about their overall well being.

This care less attitude will sometimes bring on a host of other health problems. What is acne is a very difficult question to answer socially.

What can cause it.

Skin problems normally occur when a person reaches puberty. This is when hormones begin to affect the bodies daily routine.

Testosterone in males and estrogen in females are the biggest contributing factor to oily skin.

Our skin is programmed to start activating the sebaceous glands and more oil is produced when there is an increase of both these hormones.

Dead skin cells in the sebaceous follicle is also a factor in the creation of acne, instead of shedding and exiting the follicle,

The dead skin hangs around and get caught together with the sebum, which then jams up the follicle and in so doing swells up and enlarges the pore, creating skin problems.

What it is, and its causes are more complex that we think.
